The US Department of Energy is preparing to launch a $1bn programme to expand domestic lithium refining, as Washington seeks to strengthen its battery supply chain and reduce reliance on imports.

The funds, to be distributed through competitive bids later this year, will support projects capable of producing battery-grade lithium in line with US regulatory standards. The agency has said proposals must show strong environmental practices, transparent permitting processes and engagement with local communities.

The initiative places regulatory compliance at the centre of development. Projects that integrate environmental safeguards and community benefits are expected to have a competitive edge. Officials have also highlighted the importance of job creation and workforce training in funding decisions.

Industry groups view companies such as Albemarle, Piedmont Lithium and Redwood Materials as well positioned for future rounds, given their current investments in refining and recycling. The DOE has not confirmed participants for this tranche of funding.

The effort complements wider federal incentives, including tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act, which have directed capital toward domestic battery production. Together, these measures signal a sustained push to develop a secure and scalable clean energy supply chain within the US.

Analysts note that challenges remain, from lengthy permitting timelines to shortages of skilled labour. However, the new funding marks one of the largest federal commitments to lithium refining to date and underscores the government's expectation that US developers can match technical innovation with regulatory adherence.

By advancing projects that meet these criteria, the DOE aims to position the US as a centre for responsible lithium production in the coming decade.
